Rating 5/5

Connor, Risa, and Lev are running for their lives.

The Second Civil War was fought over reproductive rights. The chilling resolution: Life is inviolable from the moment of conception until age thirteen. Between the ages of thirteen and eighteen, however, parents can have their child "unwound," whereby all of the child's organs are transplanted into different donors, so life doesn't technically end. Connor is too difficult for his parents to control. Risa, a ward of the state is not enough to be kept alive. And Lev is a tithe, a child conceived and raised to be unwound. Together, they may have a chance to escape and to survive.

REVIEW:

Oh My God! Where should I start in this review? Should I tell about the great story line or the amazingly written characters? I ABSOLUTELY LOVED Unwind. It was fantastic. Throughout the book you follow the story of the Unwinds running away from the law to keep from being Unwound. It's not like your regular running books which seem to lag on forever they actually contain action along the path. I was happy when I finished the book and found out there would be a second.

The main characters are Connor, Risa, and Lev. Connor and Risa are unwinds that are running away. Lev is a tithe would is anticipating the day he would be Unwound because of the honor but, he is kidnapped by Connor during their escape. Connor is a teen who is unruly. Connor has a temper problem which gets him in plenty of fights throughout the book. Risa is from a place called State Homes. People who were abandoned by their parents end up in state homes if they aren't storked. Risa is a tough girl who would stand up for herself to Connor. She is ready to fight anyone because of where she is from. The last main character is Lev a tithe. A tithe is someone who was given as 10% of their family. They are brainwashed from birth of what a great honor it will be. Lev quickly tries to escape Connor and Risa as soon as he is captured but something a pastor tells him confuses him.

The writing style of Mr. Shusterman is each chapter or so is told by a different character or a different place in the book. So you aren't just stuck reading about Connors escape. There are some mini stories that just add to the greatness of the book. In the end they a combine into one big ending. I absolutely hated the ending of the book. So many unanswered question left in my brain. Then I was elated when I learned of the second book.

The cover of Unwind is just icing on the cake. It has a mysterious feel to it that added to the whole book. The overseas cover is even creepier with dismantled body part laying all over the cover. The cover isn't the best I've seen but it does go along with the book greatly. I cant wait to see what the cover of Unwholly is like.

In conclusion. Unwind is an overall AWESOME book. I loved the characters. I also loved the story line and the distinct voices of each character. I am absolutely in love with the book. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a unique read. Overall Unwind is a 5/5. I'm dying for the release of Unwholly.

  2. I read this book as well. I didnt love Shusterman's writing technique but the story was fantastic, especially the concept of being a tithe.
